Dessie Ellis TD welcomes progress for Luas workers

17 March, 2016 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin Transport spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has welcomed the news that the planned industrial action by Luas workers has been called off due to progress in negotiations with management. He said that workers deserved to have their case heard and for negotiations to bring about a fair settlement.

Deputy Ellis continued;

"Workers have rightfully set down a claim for pay increases and had so far been met with complete disinterest by the operators of the Luas. I am very glad that this behaviour has ended and that meaningful negotiations are going ahead. Luas workers are essential to our public transport network bringing thousands safely to and from the city of Dublin each day.

“Transdev, who operate the service under state contract had shown a very unfortunate lack of interest in their workers concerns up until now and the last few days have been a positive change in approach from them. Strike breaking tactics cannot be accepted by Irish workers.

“Luas receives considerable state support and has had hundreds of millions of public money invested recently in expanding the service. Public transport workers should be treated with dignity and respect and the companies that operate such services should not engage in such practices when an official industrial dispute is under way.

“I want to congratulate the workers and their representatives on their resolve in this matter. St Patricks day will be a busy day for these workers and we should all show our support for them.”
