Sinn Féin wants to recall Seanad in bid to help stop eviction of residents in Tyrrelstown
Sinn Féin Senators Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and Kathryn Reilly have today written to the Cathaoirleach and Clerk of the Seanad to request a recall.
Speaking in Galway, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said;
”I believe that the Seanad should be recalled to help force action on a number of issues of national importance this week.
"The unacceptable and immediate threat of eviction of over 100 residents from their homes in Tyrrelstown and the crisis in housing and homelessness requires urgent action by the Government and Oireachtas. We therefore must meet in a bid to stop these evictions.
"The widespread opposition expressed by the electorate to the continuing imposition of household water charges and to the existence of Irish Water is also of critical importance and must be addressed without further delay.
"The High Court judgement in recent days against the Government, and in support of the 1916 relatives campaign, to designate the Moore Street battlefield site a national monument under the protection of the State is a victory for the people of Ireland.
"It requires the Government to go back to the drawing board.
"In the week of the centenary celebrations of the 1916 Easter rising it is plainly obvious that we must agree the next steps as a matter of urgency and instruct the Government to now get on with it.
"The Dáil will meet on Tuesday for limited statements on a number of issues. Other than the issue of housing the Dáil will largely ignore the important national issues I have outlined which warrant serious consideration. I am therefore arguing that the Seanad, which is adjourned rather than dissolved, should meet to force these matters onto the political agenda at Leinster House this week.
"We must discuss the matters that count to people and force action which helps lift the burden in their daily lives."
Note to Editors
The request has been made under Standing Order 22 (3) (a) In the event of the Seanad adjourning sine die, the Cathaoirleach shall summon a meeting of the Seanad (a) whenever, in his opinion, it is necessary.
