Acting Minister For Energy needs to Act on EirGrid and pull application from An Bord Plánála - Tóibín

24 March, 2016

Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has appealed to Minister Alex White to withdraw the Eirgrid North South Interconnector planning application that is currently before An Bord Plánála Oral Hearing in Carrickmacross.

According to An Teachta Tóibín, EirGrid’s planning application has again descended into farce with the revelation that Eirgrid have made a request to An Bord Pleanála today to change 19 access entrances and routes to landowner properties.

Deputy Tóibín said:

“Shockingly Eirgrid has admitted that none of the landowners have been notified or consulted with on these plans. The suggestion that this process would commence nine months since this application was lodged in ludicrous.

“The material changes proposed by Eirgrid in the middle of the public hearing relate to the repositioning of actual access entrances range from 11 metres to 135 metres from the originally planned and submitted locations. This has come as bolt from the blue to the people of Meath who live in the curtilage of this monstrosity.

“That either the Minister, An Bord Planála or Eirgrid would think that retrospective consultation on such as controversial piece of infrastructure is sufficient is incredible. That an semi state body that is tooled up with dozens of highly paid specialists should come to the well a second time in ten years riddled with mistakes is sign of the dangerous incompetency that this project is built upon. Its also highly questionable that the inspector of the An Bord Planála would refuse to refer these details to the board.

“It is my understanding that it is the stated policy of the majority of the new Dáil that these 400,000v lines are undergrounded.  The Acting Minister for Energy has no option but to reflect the will of the Dáil, uphold the planning process and direct EirGrid to withdraw this application.  EirGrid must go back to the drawing board and utilise new technological developments and underground  these cables.”
