Adams contacts Minister for Heritage to demand immediate action in relation to Moore Street Battlefield site
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has written to the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys to demand immediate action from her to introduce a preservation order without delay on the newly designated Moore Street Battlefield site.
Speaking today, Deputy Adams said:
“The High Court judgement in support of the 1916 relatives campaign to save Moore Street from the immediate threat of demolition by developers is a huge victory for the people of Ireland in this centenary year of the Easter Rising.
“Under no circumstances should the state appeal this High Court decision.
“The state abdicated their responsibility to protect and preserve our national heritage. Now that the High Court has designated the battlefield site a national monument, the onus is now on the Minister responsible to introduce a preservation order on the site.
“This is the view of the All Party Oireachtas Committee on Moore St. We met on Tuesday 22nd March and were briefed on the court case by the 1916 Relatives who were involved.
“Minister Humphreys and the Government must go back to the drawing board and agree a regeneration and development plan which will be a fitting tribute to the men and women of 1916 and our proud republican history.”
