Axing Young Ballymun ‘a Moral and Economic Mistake’ – Boylan
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan is appealing to the new incoming government to save the Young Ballymun project and to roll it out nationally.
Young Ballymun is a prevention and early intervention strategy that works to improve the education, health and mental health outcomes of children, young people and families in Ballymun.
Ms Boylan says
“The only way to seriously address the problems of our most disadvantaged children is to increase their opportunities in life.
“I have worked in the Ballymun community and seen first-hand the difference that Young Ballymun has made. Children coming through this programme have increased literacy skills and reduced behavioural problems.
“This is a project that works and the long term impacts will not only benefit the children of Ballymun but the whole of society. Child Poverty across Ireland is growing and here we are sitting on a project that has independently verified results that could be replicated across the country.
“It is incredibly short-sighted that a project which has clearly demonstrated its effectiveness is in danger of closing because of funding.
“I am asking all newly elected TDs and to whoever forms the next government to see that saving young Ballymun is not just morally right but economically right, it is an investment in our children that will pay for itself many times over in the future.”
