Mayor Commends Homeless Campaigners Volunteer Initiative
Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Sarah Holland, has commended the work done by Uplift and homeless parent Erica Fleming in highlighting the huge number of empty units across Dublin City.
“The amount of units empty across Dublin city is scandalous, at a time when we have families sleeping in cars and hospital waiting rooms.
South Dublin County Council aim to have our empty units turned around within 9 weeks, and have among the lowest amount of empty units in the country.
Housing staff here do their absolute best within the resources they have, but what we need from this new Government is a commitment to begin a large scale building plan.
We need properly planned, mixed tenure developments of social and affordable housing. This will be a long term investment into the future Ireland, and will create much needed construction jobs.”
800 volunteers from around Dublin city committed to giving their time and expertise to help Dublin city council make empty homes inhabitable.
Cllr Holland said:
“These people have to be commended. They stepped up to the plate and committed to doing something practical to help our homeless citizens.
The fact is that they shouldn’t have to – questions need to be asked of Dublin City Council about their ability to manage their stock.”
