Tesco must respect the rights of workers – Cullinane

11 April, 2016 - by David Cullinane TD

Sinn Féin TD and Workers’ Rights Spokesperson David Cullinane has said that Tesco cannot act unilaterally to amend workers’ contracts and must respect the rights of workers, saying that wishing to ‘streamline’ arrangements was not an adequate reason to erode the entitlements that workers were owed.

The Waterford TD said:

“No company can erode the rights of workers through a desire a merely streamline pay arrangements. The Tesco workers in question signed contracts pre-1996 and now the company has decided that this is simply a nuisance that they can write off with the stroke of a pen. Rather than reward the loyalty of these workers, Tesco would seek to cut their pay and sick leave entitlements.

“I await the ballot of Mandate-backed workers on April 15th, but in the meantime it is crucial that Tesco do not take any rash action and to recognise the length of service of these men and women. To almost punish workers who have given 20 years of service simply boggles the mind.”
