Doolan confident of incineration victory

12 February, 2005

Sinn Féin's Dublin Spokesperson on the Environment & Representative for Dublin South East, Councillor Daithí Doolan, has indicated that he is, "confident that incineration will be ruled out of the Dublin City Development Plan once and for all."

Speaking ahead of Monday night's City Council debate, Cllr. Doolan said:

"I am tabling a motion that will rule any form of incineration out of the City Development Plan for the Poolbeg Peninsula. Despite what Minister Dick Roche thinks it is Dublin City Councillors who will have the last say on any incinerator being built on the Poolbeg Peninsula. I am confident that we will have enough cross party support to rule incineration out of any development plan for this city."

The waste crisis that this city faces will not be resolved by simply burning or burying the waste, we need to implement a 'Zero Waste Strategy' as presented by Sinn Féin. That means a strategy whereby we reduce the waste we produce, invest in recycling and reuse where appropriate.‰

In conclusion Cllr. Doolan called on both, "the City Management and the Minister for Environment to abide by the vote on Monday night. We can not let ourselves by bullied by people who have no mandate from the people of Dublin." ENDS
