Sinn Féin aims to put democracy back in the chamber
Sinn Féin's Dublin South East Representative, Councillor Daithí Doolan, speaking at a press conference today has called, "for immediate reform of government legislation so as power is given back to City & County Councillors. We aim to put democracy back in the council Chamber"
Speaking at today's press conference, Cllr. Doolan said:
"Sinn Fein will be supporting the Anti Bin Charge Campaign mobilisation on February 26th, we have a track record second to none in opposing this double taxation. City Council management have resorted to bully boy tactics in threatening residents with letters from debt collectors and summons to court yet they have failed to break the resistance to bin charges. Tens of thousands of households are still refusing to comply with this unjust and unworkable double tax."
Sinn Féin will continue to campaign against these bin charges, we will campaign on the streets, in Council chambers and in Leinster House. We have proposed legislation that will put the power back with Local Authorities to decide when or if service charges should be introduced, currently the power to impose service charges lie solely with the City and County Managers."
In conclusion Cllr. Doolan called on all parties, "to support this legislative reform and put democracy back where it belongs, in Local Authorities with those of us who have a democratic mandate." ENDS
