Carthy congratulates Healy on election as IFA president

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has conveyed his congratulations to Joe Healy from Galway following his election as President of the Irish Farmers Association.

A Member of the European Committee for Agriculture & Rural Development, Carthy said:

“I want to convey my congratulations, and that of Sinn Féin, to Joe Healy on his election as President of the Irish Farmers Association.

"The importance of the agricultural sector in Ireland is reflected in the many strong farming organisations that have been established over the years.  Many view the IFA leadership elections as the beginning a new chapter for the largest of those organisation.

"Joe Healy, as president, will have an important job in rebuilding the trust that has been lost in his organisation by many of its own members.  The election was a great catalyst for debate on the issues facing farmers today, their asks for the next government and of the EU, as well as ways to bring the IFA forward.  The post-election scenario can now be a period of delivery in very challenging times for Irish agriculture.

“Irish agriculture is at a crucial juncture with markets currently experiencing a series of shocks and crises across almost all sectors.  Many Irish farmers are under tremendous pressures that, if not adequately addressed, will bring an end to the family farm network as we know it.

“I have worked closely with the IFA on many issues since my election to the European Parliament and my appointment to the Agriculture & Rural Development committee.  Everything I have done in Europe, just like my colleagues in the Dáil and in the Stormont Assembly, has been focused on securing fair prices and conditions for Irish family farmers.

“In this regard I look forward to engaging with the new President in the coming weeks and years and I wish him well over his term.” ENDS
