Outgoing Seanad could and should be recalled to deal with emergency legislation on suspended sentences – Ó Clochartaigh

20 April, 2016

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has said the outgoing Seanad could and should be recalled to deal with emergency legislation that is required to deal with the court ruling yesterday on the activation of suspended sentences.

Speaking today, Senator Ó Clochartaigh said;

“The ruling from the High Court yesterday is deeply worrying and clearly needs to be dealt with urgently.

“Claims that the Oireachtas cannot deal with this issue until after a government is formed are not true.

“The Dáil can legislate without an executive in place and the outgoing Seanad could and should be recalled to deal with emergency legislation on this issue.

“There is absolutely no reason why emergency legislation cannot be brought forward today if the caretaker government had the will to do so.”
