Western Development Commission Report shows much more needs to be done to ensure Fair Recovery – Matt Carthy MEP

21 April, 2016 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West, MatT Carthy, has stated that a recent Insights report from the Western Development Commission highlights the need for targeted measures to support the local economy and job creation in the West of Ireland.

Carthy said:

"This report is a damning indictment of the failures of successive Governments to put in place the necessary supports in terms of infrastructure, services and investment in order to ensure that the western region flourishes.

"The report shows that, while there has been an increase of 2.8% of people at work in the western region in Quarter 1 of 2015 this was less than half the jobs growth experienced across the state as a whole for the same period (6.3%)

"In particular the report emphasises the fact that Youth Unemployment in the region is significantly higher than across the state, with the gap widening since 2012 with the finding that "young jobseekers in the region seem to face considerable barriers to accessing a job."

"Furthermore, the Western Region’s job growth relies heavily on rising self employment with 20.5% of all working people in the region self-employed compared with just 15.7% across the state. This indicates that relatively limited job options, especially in rural areas, has meant that more people have had to create their own jobs.

"I am well aware from my many visits to the counties of Sligo, Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon and Leitrim that people from the Western Region have not felt the effects of the much lauded economic recovery and this report confirms that fact.

"Sinn Féin recently launched a Stand Up For The West Campaign, where the party outlined a number of proposals that would seek to reverse the decades of underinvestment in the region and revitalise the local economy of the West.

"At our Ard Fhéis this weekend, these proposals will be put before the party for official endorsement by our membership and Sinn Féin will continue to push for their full implementation to ensure a Fair Recovery for this region."
