Ó Broin Welcomes Minister Kelly Appearance Before Housing & Homeless Committee
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Mid-West Eoin Ó Broin has welcomed the news that Minister Alan Kelly is scheduled to appear before the Dáil Housing and Homeless Committee this Thursday at 10.30.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
‘I would like to welcome the news that Minister Kelly will appear before the Dáil Housing and Homeless Committee this Thursday at 10.30.
‘This will be the first opportunity that TDs from the 32nd Dáil will have the opportunity to question the Minister on the deepening housing and homeless crisis.
‘Sinn Féin will be particularly keen to hear what the Minister plans to do to stem the tide of homelessness and to increase the supply of social housing.
‘Contrary to what the Minister has been saying to date, his strategy is clearly failing to address the causes of the housing crisis.
‘Indeed a number of decisions that he and his Government colleagues made over the last five years are making the situation worse.
‘The new Dáil Housing and Homeless Committee has a responsibility to present to the Dáil new ideas and new proposals that will achieve what five years of Fine Gael and Labour failed to achieve.
‘Central to this must be a significant increase in funding for local authorities to increase the supply of social housing through acquisitions and new builds and action to tackle the spiralling cost of rents. Without these measures the crisis is simply going to get worse.’
