Lynn Boylan MEP welcomes UN intervention on Ibrahim Halawa case

27 April, 2016 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin, Lynn Boylan has today welcomed the news that the UN Special Procedures have contacted the Egyptian Government to express their concerns at the arbitrary detention of Ibrahim Halawa.

"My understanding is that following a submission made by KRW Law last July on behalf of Ibrahim Halawa to the UN Special rapporteurs on Torture, Counter Terrorism and Human Rights and the Working Group on arbitrary detention, the UN Special Procedures have felt it necessary to make this intervention."

The Dublin MEP said

"This intervention by the United Nations is very significant and adds to the growing number of voices including the European Parliament that have called for Ibrahim's immediate release on the basis that his ongoing detention is a violation of his human rights.

The Communication from the UN calls for Ibrahim's bail or unconditional release to halt the alleged violations and to prevent further violations occurring.

"I would call on the Irish Government to endorse this communication and for the Egyptian Authorities to take the actions outlined in the UN communication." added Ms Boylan.
