Representatives of the north favouring a Brexit are being irresponsible and reckless.
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said Sinn Féin is not willing to “play fast and loose” with the benefits of EU membership.
Addressing the European Parliament in Brussels, Ms Anderson said,
“Those in the British government and on the right who represent the north of Ireland and advocate 'leave' in the upcoming Brexit referendum are being irresponsible and reckless.
“The constituency I'm most concerned about is my own. The north is a net beneficiary of the EU to the tune of £3.5 billion.
“Social enterprise, charities and community groups - the 3rd sector - all benefit from EU membership and international financial institutions warn of a sharp contraction of our economy post-Brexit.
“Our 1st Minister Martin McGuinness has worked tirelessly to attract millions in FDI to the north as a gateway to 500 million European customers.
“Our farmers are reliant on huge EU financial support. Our Hill Farmers, for example, have fought long and hard for recognition from CAP.
“The DUP, elements of the British Government and the Eurosceptic right are willing to play fast and loose with this - Sinn Féin isn't!” ENDS
