Ní Riada welcomes EU recruitment drive for Irish Linguistic Assistants
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has welcomed the announcement of an EU competition to recruit 13 linguistic assistants with Irish by the end of the month, and stated that this is the first step in a much larger drive to increase the numbers of Irish Language interpreters, translators and lawyer linguists in the European institutions.
Liadh Ní Riada said:
“Irish is a full official language of the European Union, and is the first official language of our country. I have campaigned for equal treatment for Irish in the European Parliament since my election in 2014, and last month secured a fund of €3.7 million from the Parliament in order to begin recruitment.
“Irish is an important part of our national heritage and central to much of our culture, but it is also a modern, functional and living language. It is my first language, and the first language of a growing numbers of families across Ireland. Official status is not enough, both the state and the EU need to ensure that Irish enjoys parity of esteem with the other languages of the EU.
“We need to show those learning and living through Irish that the language has value, and that there are jobs available for Irish speakers. I am delighted that 13 quality jobs are being created within the European Institutions and I encourage anyone with an interest to log on to the EU Careers website www.eu-careers.eu for more information.”
