Anger at pay-by-weight charges for recycled waste – Cllr Chris Curran

11 May, 2016 - by Chris Curran

Sinn Féin Councillor for Sandyford Glencullen, Chris Curran, has slammed the implementation of the Waste Management Act (2016).

"Once the bills start to arrive, people will be furious when they see new charges for the collection to their green bins", said Curran

Curran's remarks come after a Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council report stated that new charges will come into force from July 1st.

"This is bad legislation that will only succeed in an increase in fly-tipping and back garden bonfires.

"The implementation of this Act is probably one of the most counter productive pieces of legislation ever introduced. It's another example of more stealth taxes that will punish those who already recycle and an additional burden on those already struggling to get by.

“The legislation is a disgraceful indictment on Labour as it was introduced by Minister Alan Kelly during his tenure at the Department of Environment.

“As yet the charges are unknown as it’s a matter for each Waste Operator to introduce the new charges. As yet there are no details available to the Council on the charges proposed by any operator.”
