Galway University Hospital is not fit for purpose – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has welcomed the acknowledgement from the management of the Saolta Hospital group that the Galway University Hospital (GUH) is not fit for purpose and that a new hospital should be built to cater for the needs of the people in the West.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“I have just met with the Management team from Saolta Hospital Group along with Oireachtas members and members of the Regional Health Forum from Galway Roscommon.
“They said it was clear that the capacity of the present hospital cannot deal with the numbers passing through and that in part, is a reason for the constantly high numbers of people on waiting lists.
“GUH has the highest inpatient and outpatient waiting lists in the country.
“I am calling on the government to put a working group together to put a plan together for such a new facility taking into consideration the clinical, social, and economic factors.
“In the meantime, staffing and capacity issues in GUH must be addressed to reduce the unacceptable waiting lists and provide a quality service for patients.”
