Carlow should benefit from EIB finance for housing – Liadh Ní Riada MEP
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has stated that finance from the European Investment Bank should be used to build houses in Co. Carlow. She made the remarks following meetings with senior county council officials alongside Kathleen Funchion TD.
Liadh Ní Riada said:
“We are in the middle of a housing crisis across this state and families in Carlow are suffering too. The last government stood by and let this crisis develop, and it seems that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are content to do the same in their new government arrangement.
“The European Investment Bank has already made finance available to the Irish Government for social housing. Last year a package of €300 million was announced, with part-financing from the EIB Unfortunately this has yet to be fully drawn down and put to use.
“Meanwhile 2,000 children are living in emergency accommodation this month, and local authority housing lists continue to grow. The only real solution to this crisis is to build houses. The EIB is providing the financial backing to do it, all that's needed now is the political will.
“While Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil bury their heads in the sand, millions earmarked for housing remains unused, and families in Carlow continue to wait for a home.”
