O’Brien says impact of alleged O’Sullivan comments leaves question over position
Speaking today Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Deputy Jonathan O’Brien called on Garda Commissioner to clarify what direction she gave her legal team concerning Sgt Maurice McCabe’s motivations for his actions.
The Cork North Central TD said;
“The reports emerging from the Irish Examiner are deeply worrying and while we accept that there are laws precluding what can be repeated from the Commission’s activities, there is nothing preventing the Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan from clarifying whether or not she instructed her legal team to state that Maurice McCabe was motivated by malice.
“It is hugely problematic that what O’Sullivan allegedly said privately differs so wildly from what she said in public.
“Given the impact on this for potential whistleblowers if the alleged comments from the Irish Examiner reports are found to be accurate, it leaves a question mark over the tenability of O’Sullivan’s position.
“I am calling on the Garda Commissioner to clarify exactly what direction she gave her legal team concerning Sgt Maurice McCabe’s motivations for his actions.
“I am further calling on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald and Taoiseach Enda Kenny to state whether they have confidence in the Garda Commissioner given what has happened.”
