Charging for Green Bins was ‘an ill-conceived notion’ – McDonald

18 May, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin TD and deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald has welcomed the Government row back on the introduction of minimum mandatory pricing for the collection of recyclable waste, saying that such a proposal was “foolhardy and regressive”.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“I am glad that the Government has decided to scrap the ill-conceived notion of introducing mandatory charging for the collection of so-called ‘green bins’. This measure, introduced in the last gasps of the Fine Gael/Labour regime was foolhardy and regressive to the point to recklessness.

“The measure would discourage recycling of household waste and accelerate the already widespread practice of illegal dumping of rubbish. It will also disproportionately punish those on low incomes, carers and those who suffer from disability or ill health.

“Sinn Féin therefore tabled a motion on the Dáil order paper which would stop the imminent imposition of these charges.

“Fortunately, the Government has displayed a level of common sense that was so lacking in the previous administration.”
