27 years to clear Ballyfermot housing list – Doolan

19 May, 2016 - by Daithí Doolan

According to Dublin City Council’s latest housing report, it will take 27 years to clear their housing list in Ballyfermot, according to Sinn Féin DCC Cllr Daithí Dollan.

Cllr. Doolan, chair of Dublin City Council housing committee, said:

“This latest housing report, discussed at the Dublin South Central Area Committee, shows that there are now 2,850 applicants on Ballyfermot’s housing list. It grew by 39 since January, but only 35 were housed in the same period.

“At this rate, with no new applicants, it will take over 27 years to clear the housing list. 184 families are already on the list for over 10 years. This is totally unacceptable.

“This is a damning indictment of consecutive governments housing policy. Fianna Fail, Labour, and Fine Gael have starved local government of essential funding. We need a new direction in housing. The new Fine Gael government claimed that housing would be priority. Now is the time to prove that.

“Dublin City Council has the land, but we lack the funding. The much promised government funding for local authorities must be released as a matter of urgency.”
