Return to Bertie Ahern-esque Ministerial numbers unacceptable – Adams

19 May, 2016 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, speaking following the appointment of Ministers of State by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny this evening, has described the increase in appointments as “turning the process of Government formation into a farce”.

Teachta Adams said:

“The Taoiseach has made some serious errors in his appointment of both the Cabinet and his junior ministers. The erosion of the position of the Arts and Heritage Ministry is a diminution of the unique status of the Arts in Irish life. Likewise, the failure to give Rural Affairs the status it deserves reflects badly on the Taoiseach.

“With regard to the junior Ministerial appointments; we welcome the appointment of a junior minister for Disability and a junior minister for Mental Health and Older People.

“There should have at the very least been a junior minister for the Arts appointed in the absence of a Cabinet Minister.

“The appointments could have been made within the existing number of Ministries and a return to the excesses of Bertie Ahern-era Ministerial numbers, where there are 33 senior and junior ministers in a Government supported by just 59 TDs, and a noticeable lack of women appointments, is entirely unacceptable and has turned the whole process of Government formation into a farce.”
