Sinn Féin calls for the immediate appointment of a Minister for the Arts – Tóibín
Sinn Féín TD and party spokesperson for the Arts, Deputy Peadar Tóibín, has expressed dismay at the government’s failure to appoint a Minister for the Arts.
Speaking in response to Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s announcement yesterday of junior cabinet portfolios Deputy Tóibín said:
“Failure to appoint either a junior or a senior Minister for the Arts displays the government’s ongoing contempt and disregard for what is a crucial societal asset.
“The Arts serve a crucial function in society as they enrich our lives; this is particularly the case as we emerge from a difficult period of austerity.
“The arts have been subjected to repeated cuts in successive Fine Gael budgets, and are in desperate need of official recognition and adequate resourcing.
“They are also a significant employer, especially in the film and music industry.
“I therefore call on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to appoint a Minister for the Arts without further delay."
