Sinn Féin call for explanation of Garda overtime figures – O’ Brien
Speaking following the emergence of Garda overtime payment figures today, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Deputy Jonathan O'Brien has called on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to explain these figures.
The Cork North Central TD said;
"Garda overtime payments increased by €2.5m during the first three months of 2016 compared to this period in 2015.
"The public are entitled to know what the reason is for this sharp increase when footing an overtime bill for €8.7m for a three month period.
"This is a clear result of a lack of Garda recruits. If you operate your police service on a constant skeleton crew basis then you are going to have a shortfall when crime increases.
"Considering these increases came before there was a spike in organised crime amongst gangs in Dublin, it is even more important that the Minister state whether the Gardaí were operating with below-minimum numbers.
"I am calling on the Minister to set out her plan for Garda recruitment and provide answers to these questions as a matter of urgency."
