Review of RACE Scheme welcome but clarification needed – Nolan
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Education and Skills, Deputy Carol Nolan has welcomed the confirmation received by the Minister for Education that there is a review taking place of the Reasonable Accommodation Scheme for Certificate Examinations. Deputy Nolan had highlighted the need for a review of the scheme last week in light of a number of high court actions challenging the operation of the scheme.
Deputy Nolan said:
“I welcome the fact that the Minister has confirmed that there is a review in place for the operation of the RACE scheme.
“This scheme is there to provide supports for children with special educational and other needs in the examination environment and there are serious concerns in relation to its operation, given the fact that a number of students have been left with no alternative but to seek legal redress following the refusal of supports.
“I am calling for the Minister to outline the terms of reference for the review and to advise what consultation will take place with relevant stakeholders during the course of the review.
“It is important that parents, students and the appropriate representative bodies have the opportunity to inform such a review and I am calling on the Minister to ensure that sufficient consultation takes place during the process.”
