Carthy says Star Wars location has 'massive tourist potential'

24 May, 2016 - by Matt Carthy MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has said that Malin Head, the recent location of filming for a forthcoming Star Wars movie, has massive untapped tourist potential.

Carthy, who recently held discussions with local community representatives, has pledged to seek national and European support for the local community in developing services and facilities in the Donegal beauty spot.

The MEP was accompanied on his visit to Malin Head on Friday, 20th May by Sinn Féin Senator Pádraig MacLochlainn and Cllr Albert Doherty.

Matt Carthy said:

“Malin Head Community Development Association is doing great work in seeking to promote the area, to develop tourism and to increase local employment opportunities.

“As Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head is an iconic Irish visitor attraction with massive untapped tourism potential.

“This is set to increase when the area is seen by millions in the new Star Wars film.

“But the area around Malin Head, which has suffered from high unemployment and emigration needs increased infrastructure and accessibility to exploit this tourism potential.

“This includes transport. Currently a limited number of buses service the peninsula and few enter Malin Head itself.

“Any development at Malin Head also needs to be carried out with sensitivity and must enhance, protect and promote the unique local and natural environment.

“I will lend my support and assistance at a European level to local efforts to develop this area sensitively and for the benefit of the community.”
