Ó Laoghaire calls on minister to protect children

24 May, 2016 - by Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD

Sinn Fein TD for Cork South-Central Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has said that it is disgraceful that we are now in a situation where homeless children are being placed in adult hostels. This has huge cause for concern from a child protection perspective.

Speaking this afternoon, Deputy Ó Laoghaire, Sinn Fein spokesperson on Children & Youth Affairs said:

“The fact that these placements are now considered as strategies is of grave concern. These placements are by no means suitable for children and would raise certain questions pertaining to issues of child protection. I do understand that this is a last resort to prevent children sleeping rough of the streets of Dublin, however, I would also be concerned that this may put children at undue risk.

“We can’t take the perspective of the lesser of two evils in this instance. Both the placement of children in these hostels, and the potential of children sleeping rough on our streets, must be viewed as equally and grossly unacceptable.

“Minister Zappone must act to put pressure on Minister Coveney to ensure that child protection best practice is adhered to.”
