Housing is a right, not a privilege – Ellis

28 May, 2016 - by Dessie Ellis TD

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis has called on the government to declare a housing emergency and to act now to ensure that no more children end up in emergency accommodation.

Speaking today before the demonstration organised by the National Homeless and Housing Coalition, Teachta Ellis said:

“Today at 2pm, a broad group of citizens, trade unions, and political parties will take to the streets demanding immediate government action on the housing crisis.

“It is not acceptable that 2,121 children will tonight be sleeping in emergency accommodation.

“The Minister has promised an Action Plan within 100 days. How many more children will be forced into emergency accommodation by then?

“We need solutions now. The government needs to declare a housing emergency and immediately start funding local authorities so they can acquire more vacant homes for much needed social housing.

“Those in private rented accommodation are struggling with increasing rents. The government needs to introduce rent certainty and give these people some breathing space.

“Access to affordable, good quality housing is a right not a privilege and we are gathering in Dublin city centre today to remind this Fine Gael government of that.”
