Seanad Diaspora appointee is Fine Gael activist – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Diaspora, Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has said that the Taoiseach’s appointment of Billy Lawless to the Seanad was being portrayed as non-party, when in fact he was a Fine Gael activist and fundraiser for the party.
Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said:
“All the Government’s promises of new politics have disappeared like snow off a ditch with the announcement of the Taoiseach’s nominees to the Seanad.
“The reality is that Enda Kenny has used the appointment system to reward to party loyalists.
“This is not confined to former Fine Gael elected representatives, but also includes Billy Lawless.
“Mr Lawless was supposedly appointed as a non-party advocate for the Diaspora - but is in fact a Fine Gael activist, fundraiser for the party in the United States, and a former Chairperson of Fine Gael in Galway West.
“While I look forward to working with Senator Lawless on issues of concern to the Diaspora, to portray his appointment as anything other than party political is disingenuous.”
