Government must provide clarity on additional Garda resources – Adams
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, speaking during Leaders Questions in the Dáil this morning, has said that the Government must indicate when new policing measures for Dublin’s north inner city will be put in place, if there will be additional Gardaí recruited, and if additional funding will be provided to An Garda Síochána.
Teachta Adams said:
“The establishment of a Garda taskforce for Dublin’s north inner city, which was announced yesterday, would be welcome if it meant additional resources being provided, but in north inner city Dublin, there are 140 less Gardaí than there were in 2010 and that doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
“And unless there is an increase in Garda numbers, such a taskforce will have to be made up of Gardaí redeployed from frontline duty elsewhere, which won’t be replaced in their existing roles.
“Such a lack of Garda resources is not an accident. It is a direct result of Government policy and of Fianna Fáil before them. That needs to be totally reversed.
“It is vital that the Government indicate when the new policing measures announced will be put in place, if there will be additional Gardaí recruited, and if additional funding will be provided.
“It must also recognise that this is not just a policing issue. It is just as important that there is increased investment and resources provided for communities in education, drug treatment, job creation and crime prevention to tackle the root causes of crime.”
