Ó Donnghaile welcomes Conradh legal challenge
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed news that Conradh na Gaeilge has been given the right to a judicial review on its call for the implementation of a strategy for the Irish Language.
Niall Ó Donnghaile said:
“The British Government specifically pledged to implement an Irish-Language Act in the 2006 St Andrew’s Agreement.
“Last year former DCAL Minister Carál Ní Chuilín conducted a public consultation into an Irish Language Act.
“Some 13,000 people responded with more than 90 per cent in favour of an Irish Language Act.
“It is my belief that the public is ahead of unionist politicians who remain opposed to an Irish Language Act and the implementation of a Language Strategy.
“I support Conradh na Gaeilge’s decision to mount a legal challenge in the courts as the rights of Irish speakers need to be protected.”
