Anderson criticises UN after Gaza environmental vote blocked
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has criticised the UN after a resolution on the environmental impact on the Israeli military onslaughts on Gaza was blocked.
Ms Anderson said;
"A draft resolution calling for a team of UN experts to assess the environmental impact of Israeli military operations in Gaza was due to be debated last week.
"However, the resolution was blocked after pressure from Israel, the US and Canada. They used a technicality to block this important resolution in a late night session.
"It is particularly disappointing that the Canadian government joined in blocking this resolution. This is not the new beginning we were promised by the Trudeau government.
"The people of Gaza are suffering daily as a result of the huge damage caused by the Israeli military onslaughts.
"Gaza's sewage system has effectively collapsed meaning that surgical implements have to be washed in sea water which is totally unacceptable.
"The UN and the wider international community, including the EU, have a responsibility to take action to support the people of Gaza."
