Latest claims reinforce need to investigate Leitrim Garda scandal - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin Sligo/Leitrim TD Martin Kenny who last week revealed serious allegations of Garda malpractice in the Sligo/Leitrim Garda Division has reiterated his call for a full Commission of Investigation into the scandal.Responding to an article on the allegations in today’s Sunday Times, Martin Kenny said:
“I have seen the article in the Sunday Times and it changes nothing regarding the need for a Commission of Investigation into allegations of Garda malpractice in Leitrim.
“To be absolutely clear, the whistleblowers who contacted me have not withdrawn or retracted any of the allegations they have made and are steadfast in their demand to have these issues investigated fully.
“I fully support the whistleblowers' demand for a Commission of Investigation.“My meeting with GSOC last week confirmed that although GSOC were aware of some of the issues I raised in the Dáil, they have not investigated those issues and indeed confirmed that due to legislative constraints the issues were outside the remit of GSOC.
“Whether or not some informants withdraw or retract past statements is irrelevant. As anyone who has any knowledge of such matters knows, this is common with informants. It merely reinforces the need for these issues to be investigated.
“I would be deeply concerned if Garda management or their press office, facilitated by some crime journalists, were once again seeking to discredit and undermine whistleblowers who bring forward serious issues of public interest that require investigation.
“I believe the Sunday Times article reinforces the need for a full Commission of Investigation into the allegations I have raised, as it demonstrates other aspects of the inappropriate use of informants.
“Several of the incidents which I pointed to in my Dáil contribution last week had no connection whatsoever to any Garda informants."
