New Seanad, Same Old Politics – Ó Clochartaigh

8 June, 2016

Leagan Gaeilge Thios - Irish version follows

The new Seanad will be dominated by the same old politics as the ones that went, before if today’s events in Leinster House are anything to go by, according to Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking after the inaugural sitting today, the Galway West – South Mayo Senator said:

“After all the talks of reform and new politics, it was the same old scenario playing out today.

“I was delighted to nominate my colleague, Senator Rose Conway Walsh for the position of Cathaoirleach. I was very disappointed however that Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour supported Denis O’Donovan from Fianna Fáil instead.

“We hear so much rhetoric about getting more women involved in politics, breaking the glass ceiling and gender quotas. When we put it to the Seanad today, they failed the first test in ‘new politics’ miserably, with only the Sinn Féin Senators and two independents walking the walk in support of Rose.

“We have great hope for the new Seanad, but if the establishment parties are going to back each other up in this manner and if the Independents are going to dither, then we will see more of the same from the government when it comes to railroading legislation through the Seanad.

“Sinn Féin however, will continue to provide the real main opposition in the Seanad as our Dáil colleagues are doing to date.”

Seanad nua, an Sean-pholaitíocht  céanna – Ó Clochartaigh

Beidh an sean-pholaitíocht céanna i réim sa Seanad nua  is a bhí sna cinn a tháinig roimhe, más léiriú ar bith iad eachtraí an lae inniu i dTeach Laighean, dar le Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó inniu i ndiaidh don Seanad nua suí don chéad uair, deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

“Taréis an baothchaint ar fad maidir le h-athchóiriú agus polaitíocht nua is í an sean-phort céanna  bhí dhá sheinm inniu.

“Bhí áthas ormsa mo chomhleacaí an Seanadóir Rose Conway Walsh a ainmniu do phost an Chathaoirligh. Ach, bhí díomá mhór orm gur thacaigh Fianna Fáíl, Fine Gael & an Lucht Oibre le Denis O’Donovan as Fianna Fáil ina h-ionad.

“Cloiseann muid cuid mhaith cainte maidir le h-athchóiriú polaitiúil, faoi níos mó mná a bheith gníomhach sa pholaitíocht agus an tseileáil gloine a bhriseadh, ach nuair a chur muid deis ós comhair an tSeanad inniu, theip go tubaisteach orthu an ‘pholaitíocht nua’ a chleachtadh agus gan ach Seanadóirí Shinn Féín agus beirt de na neamhspleáigh ag tacú le h-ainmniúchán Rose.

“Tá dóchas mhór againn don Seanad nua, ach má tá na páirtithe bunaidh chun cúltaca a thabhairt dá chéile ar an gcaoi seo go rialta agus má tá an neamhchinnteacht a léirigh neamhspleáigh eile inniu le leanúint ar aghaidh, níi bheidh stró ar bith ar an Rialtas reachtaíocht a bhrú thríd an Seanad mar a rinne siad cheana.

“Beidh Sinn Féin ag leanúint orainn áfach, mar an fíor phríomhpháirtí freasúra sa tSeanad ar an gcaoi chéanna is atá ár gcomhleacaithe Dála ag gniomhú le tamall anuas chomh maith.”
