Women have suffered enough – 8th Amendment must go – Mary Lou McDonald TD

10 June, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said that the need for repeal of the 8th Amendment in the Constitution is now unanswerable. Deputy McDonald was commenting on a report published yesterday by the UN Human Rights Committee, which found that the constitutional clause which bans abortion for women carrying a foetus with a fatal abnormality, subjects women to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.

Deputy McDonald said.

“The state stands indicted, this is a long running saga and women are at the receiving end of very, very bad politics. I think the judgement is absolutely crystal clear – the position of the state is now untenable. It’s absolutely clear that the 8th Amendment has to be repealed and it’s clear that for that to happen we have to have a referendum.

“The government manoeuvring that is clearly designed for further delay is not acceptable. It’s not acceptable that government and politicians dodge their responsibilities and cause further delay and meanwhile women suffer.

“I see no merit, no excuse for government or for any minister to stall any further.  The UN’s judgement is just the latest in a series of rulings that has made it clear that the 8th Amendment has to be removed from the Constitution.

“We need a repeal, we need a referendum for that to happen and for this government to drag their heels on this matter now is frankly disgraceful and unacceptable.”
