Water Commission’s terms of reference too restrictive - Ó Broin

11 June, 2016 - by Eoin Ó Broin TD

Responding to the publication of the terms of reference for the Government's expert group on the funding of water services, Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has said the terms 'are too restrictive'.

Deputy Ó Broin said:

'Sinn Féin welcomes any opportunity to have a reasoned and evidenced based debate on the future of water and sanitation services.

'Unfortunately the terms of reference of the Government’s expert group are too narrow.

'They should be amended to include consideration of issues such as water poverty, social justice and the use of new technologies to improve water conservation.

'Sinn Féin is also of the view that the Right2Water movement should be represented on the Commission.

'I will be writing to Minister Simon Coveney in the coming days suggesting amendments to the terms of reference and supporting the request by the Right2Water movement to a place on the Commission.

'Sinn Féin will engage positively with the Commission and make the case for water to be treated as a human right delivered on the basis of need and not ability to pay.'
