Ní Riada makes pilot project submission for the creation of a Single Boat Payment Plan
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has made a pilot project submission to the EU Commission for the creation and implementation of a Single Boat Payment Plan for the fishing industry.
A member of the European Fisheries Committee, Ms Ní Riada said,
“In my pilot project proposal for a Single Boat Payment Plan, I highlighted the disadvantage fishermen face in comparison in terms of fishing opportunities, geography, enforcement and climatic conditions at sea.
“I feel it necessary for fishermen to be provided with some sort of support, much in line with what’s being given to small farmers and there is scope for this Single Boat Payment scheme to be funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
“They experience financial hardship, especially when severe weather doesn’t allow them to work for long periods and too often they put their lives at risk to provide an income for their families.
“This scheme would offer two very important improvements to the lives of local fishermen. It would provide financial security when weather conditions make it impossible for their vessels to leave port, as well as improving work safety.
“When we met Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella a few months ago to discuss the proposal, he was quite amenable and indeed commended the submission.
“The pre assessment for my submission will take place in July, and hopefully it will result in a positive result on the pilot project proposal.” ENDS
