Rent uncertainty affects every demographic – Holland

14 June, 2016 - by Sarah Holland

Mayor of South Dublin County Council and Sinn Féin Cllr Sarah Holland, has urged all TDs to support Sinn Féin’s Rent Certainty Bill, which is due to be debated in the Dáil tonight.

The Bill aims to tackle the rent crisis which has seen thousands of families forced into emergency accommodation or onto the sofas of family and friends.

Cllr Holland said:

“We have seen first-hand the effects that rising rents had on people from Rathfarnham to Lucan and beyond; families with two incomes having to go without dinners and school trips for their kids to pay extortionate rents and some are being forced into homelessness.

“This problem affects every demographic.

“I rented myself for 13 years and we all know well what kinds of prices are being charged for below standard accommodation.

“People were left with no choice put up with this or enter the emergency accommodation system, where they face a long wait to be housed.

“We saw the effects of these high rents with food and fuel poverty steadily creeping into the homes of families with steady incomes. This was borne out by the steady increase in food parcels being handed out by the likes of Crosscare.

“We need to provide some long term certainty for renters and for landlords too.

“I will be watching closely to see if my local TDs vote for this bill, and I would urge everyone to call on their TDs to do the right thing.”
