Brexit could affect unemployment figures - Murphy

15 June, 2016 - by Conor Murphy

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has welcomed the latest fall in unemployment but said there was still a need for continued efforts to create jobs.

The Economy Committee Chair said:

"The fall in unemployment figures this month are to be welcomed with 600 more now in employment.

"The figures have also shown that economic inactivity levels have dropped to an all-time low, including long-term and youth unemployment.

"Despite this, unemployment levels and economic inactivity in the North are still higher than in Britain.

“The Executive will continue to work to attract investment, support start-ups and create more jobs and opportunities in our society.

“However economic uncertainty surrounding the Tory-driven Brexit campaign has the potential to undermine the confidence in many seeking to invest in the north as a gateway to European markets and hamper strident efforts towards job creation.”
