Anderson praises life-saving work of LÉ Róisín
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has praised the crew of the Irish naval vessel, LÉ Róisín, who saved the lives of more than 100 refugees in the Mediterranean.
Ms Anderson said;
"Thanks to the dedicated work of the crew of the Irish naval vessel, the LÉ Róisín, the lives of 111 people fleeing conflict and persecution have been saved.
"The crew of the LÉ Róisín has now saved literally hundreds of lives in the Mediterranean. Combined with the efforts of other Irish naval vessels, LÉ Eithne and LÉ Niamh, who were also deployed in the region in the past, the crew have saved thousands who otherwise would have drowned.
"As the heartbreaking scandal of deaths continues in the Mediterranean there is an onus on the international community, and the EU in particular, to redouble its humanitarian efforts to prevent further deaths."
