Senators must scrap the refuse charge hikes – Ó Clochartaigh

16 June, 2016

The Seanad can prove its relevance by scrapping the new proposed bin charge hikes next week says Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking at the launch of a Sinn Féin Private Members Bill motion which aims to withdraw the statutory instrument that allows refuse collection companies to more than double people’s bin charges after the 1stof July, the Galway West – South Mayo Senator says:

‘It’s time for Senators now to put up or shut up, particularly those from Fianna Fáil.

‘Alan Kelly introduced this instrument in the dying days of the last government which gives refuse companies a carte blanche to impose massive hikes in refuse charges and Sinn Féin want it withdrawn.

‘Fianna Fáil jumped on the bandwagon around this issue today and we are asking them to put their money where their mouth is, stand with the people and support this motion next week.

‘These new charges would cripple households that simply can’t afford to pay any more. It would be particularly harsh on families, people with extra health needs and those living in more remote areas.

‘There is a lack of transparency, regulation and fairness in relation to the proposed new regime which must be stopped.

‘The government could step in and remove this statutory instrument, but if they don’t we are calling on all Senators to do the right thing and support our motion next week to scrap these bin charge hikes.’

Caithfear na táillí dramhaíola a chaitheamh sa bhruscar– Ó Clochartaigh

Is féidir leis an tSeanad an fhiúntas a bhaineann leis a léiriú an tseachtain seo chugainn tríd na táillí nua bruscar atá molta a chaitheamh i dtraipisí, dar le Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó i ndiaidh do Shinn Féin rún Bille Gnó Príobháideach a sheoladh a tharraingeoidh siar an Ionstraim Reachtúil a cheadaíonn do na comhlachtaí bruscar táillí a dhúbailt tar éis an chéad lá d’Iúil , deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

‘Tá sé in am do bheart de réir briathar anois ó na Seanadóirí, go h-áirithe muintir Fhianna Fáil.

‘Thug Alan Kelly isteach an Ionstraim Reachtúil seo i laethanta deiridh an tsean Rialtais, a thugann cead a gcinn do na comhlachtaí dramhaíola arduithe ollmhóra a chur ar tháillí bruscar agus tá Sinn Féin ag iarraidh sin a tharraingt siar.

‘Léim Fianna Fáil ar bord leis an gceist seo inniu agus tá muid ag iarraidh orthu anois seasamh leis an gcosmhuintir agus tacú leis an rún seo sa tSeanad an tseachtain seo chugainn.

‘Is buille marfach iad na táillí seo do dhaoine nach bhfuil in ann aon chostais bhreise a sheasamh. Beidh sé thar a bheith tromchúiseach do theaghlaigh, do dhaoine le riachtanais speisialta sláinte agus iad siúd i gceantair iargúlta.

‘Tá easpa trédhearcachta, rialaithe agus cothroime ag baint leis an leagan amach nua atá molta agus caithfear é a stopadh.

‘Idir an dá linn d’fhéadfadh an Rialtas féin deireadh a chur leis an Ionstraim Reachtúil seo, ach muna ndéanann, tá muid ag impí ar chuile Sheanadóir an rud ceart a dhéanamh agus tacú le rún s’againne an tseachtain seo chugainn chun na táillí seo a chaitheamh ar an gcarn aoile, áit is dual dóibh.’
