Boylan calls for island wide inquiry into activities of undercover British Detective

16 June, 2016 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan has called for an island wide inquiry into the activities of undercover British Detective Mark Kennedy, suspected of gathering intelligence in Ireland with environmental groups.

The Dublin MEP said,

“Mark Kennedy was a British detective in the National Public Order Intelligence Unit between 2004 and 2010, and operated undercover inside several environmental groups, including those in Ireland.

“He infiltrated these groups, and indeed entered Ireland, under false pretences.

“It has emerged that Kennedy has previously undertaken criminal acts as part of his role for other countries yet it is unclear as to whether the Gardaí ever investigated his actions in Ireland or what statutory powers were used to permit him to operate in Ireland.

“I welcome the legal challenge being take on this case and I call on both Ministers for Justice on the island, Frances Fitzgerald and Claire Sugden to launch a public inquiry into Kennedys' actions. People are entitled to the truth and a clear view.”  ENDS
