The Government’s fixation with crippling ordinary householders with stealth charges and taxes continues – Lynn Boylan MEP

18 June, 2016 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan has today criticised the proposed hike in Green Bin charges.

Speaking earlier today, the Sinn Féin MEP said:

“The proposed increase in bin charges is highly unfair to people already overburdened with a plethora of new charges introduced by successive governments.

“Yet again, though, these charges highlight how we simply cannot believe a single word when it comes to right-wing government promises.

“When County Councils redirected waste collection to private companies we were told that a much more effective service would be delivered. This never happened. The services provided have suffered dramatically.

“We were also informed that Bin worker’s rights and conditions would be protected. This never happened as we have seen from recent disputes.

“And as recently as in February of this year the then Minister, Alan Kelly, stated that the new Waste Charges would be cheaper for 90% of household! This is now proven to be false when the opposite is actually true – up to 90% of people will end up paying more.

“This new system is another example of the Government’s fixation with crippling ordinary householders with stealth charges and taxes. It is a continuation of the regressive taxes that have impacted disproportionately on struggling families.

““If the government does not take action on this issue, Sinn Féin will bring a motion before the Seanad next week to annul the Statutory Instrument which has facilitated the proposed hike in costs.

“If such a situation arises I ask people to contact members of the Seanad and ask them to support Sinn Féin’s motion. It is the only certain way in which these increases can be halted.”          ENDS
