Coveney must reject waste industry offer on bin charges

19 June, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald has called on Minister Simon Coveney to reject the temporary freeze on bin charge hikes proposed by the waste industry. The Dublin Central TD has instead urged the Minister ‘to scrap the regulations on which these outrageous charges are based and to go back to the drawing board to ensure that hard pressed families can not be fleeced by unscrupulous waste companies.’

Deputy McDonald said that ‘if the Minister does not scrap the regulations Sinn Féin will push this matter to a vote in the Seanad on Wednesday.’Deputy McDonald said:“The blatant attempt at price gouging by unscrupulous waste collection companies is only possible because of the regulations introduced by former Minister Alan Kelly last January.“Clearly Statutory Instrument 24 was badly written and should never have been signed into law.“Minister Coveney must not repeat the mistake of his predecessor. He should reject the temporary freeze on bin charges proposed by the waste collection industry last Friday.“The reason he should do this is because it does not address the root cause of the problem, namely Statutory Instrument 24.“What the Minister should do is immediately scrap the existing regulation. He can do this at the stroke of a pen by introducing a new Statutory Instrument.“He should then go back to the drawing board to rethink his Government's approach to this issue. In doing so he must ensure that any new regulations do not allow hard pressed families to be fleeced by unscrupulous waste companies.“If the Minister does not scrap the regulations Sinn Féin will push this matter to a vote in the Seanad on Wednesday.“When bin charges were first being introduced by Local Authorities Sinn Féin warned that this was a prelude to privatisation. We also argued that it would lead to a reduction in the quality of service and an increase in the cost to hard pressed families.“We have been proven right on both counts. Bin collection services should never have been privatised. While the immediate job of government is to ensure that families are not fleeced the only long term solution to this problem is the return of bin collection services to Local Authorities.”
