Unelected British lords attempting to sow division ahead of EU referendum - Kearney

19 June, 2016 - by Declan Kearney

Sinn Féin MLA and National Chairperson Declan Kearney has said unelected British lords are trying to create a political diversion by sowing increased divisions ahead of the EU referendum.

Mr Kearney said;

"The fact that several senior and former members of the Ulster Unionist Party who are now unelected British lords have written a letter urging a 'leave' vote appears to be an attempt to sow new divisions with the UUP. It is clearly an attempt to use the EU referendum to mimic the leadership civil war within the British Tory party.

"All of this amounts to cynical political manoeuvring within political unionism. Our relationship with the EU should be above party in-fighting.

"The future of the island economy, the needs of local businesses and farmers, as well as the rights of workers should not be held hostage to right wing Tory civil wars in England or the North.

"That is why Sinn Féin is calling for a vote to remain on June 23."
