Sinn Féin want Fianna Fáil support to bin new Refuse Charges – Ó Clochartaigh

Sinn Féin Galway West-South Mayo Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, has said that Minister Coveney is wrong to let the waste disposal companies set the agenda on bin charges and that if he doesn’t scrap them by Wednesday that Sinn Féin will seek to have them binned.

Speaking today, Sinn Féin’s Seanad spokesperson for Housing, Planning and Local Government says:

‘It is quite clear that this remnant of Alan Kelly’s time as Minister was ill-thought out and has no benefit for the environment whatsoever. This is another cost being imposed on already financially distressed citizens which needs to be abolished.

‘Minister Coveney seems to lack the gumption to tackle the waste companies himself, so we want Fianna Fáil in particular and the opposition Senators to support us in the Seanad on Wednesday to withdraw the statutory instrument that gives the power to bin companies to charge what they want.

‘What we need then is a wider debate on the provision of waste disposal services in Ireland. Sinn Féín favours a public model which would deliver an efficient service to citizens across the country and measures which would encourage people to be environmentally friendly and reduce, reuse and recycle their waste.

‘This will be a major test for the so-called ‘new politics’ and we are putting it up to Fianna Fáil, including here in Galway and Mayo, to put their money where their mouth is on this issue.’

Sinn Féin ag lorg tacaíocht Fhianna Fáil chun deire a chur leis na táillí nua bruscar – Ó Clochartaigh

Deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin as Gaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, nár cheart don Aire Coveney a bheith ag damhsa de réir poirt na gcomhlachtaí dramhaíola príobháideacha ar tháillí bruscar agus muna gcuireann seisean deireadh leo roimh an Chéadaoin, go ndéanfaidh Sinn Féin iarracht sin a dhéanamh sa tSeanad.

Ag labhairt dó inniu, deir urlabhraí Tithíochta, Pleanála & Rialtas Áítiúil Shinn Féin sa Seanad:

‘Tá sé ríshoiléir nach bhfuil feidhm ar bith caomhnú comhshaoil leis an dlí seo a thug Alan Kelly isteach agus é ina laethanta deireadh in oifig an Aire. Is costas breise iad na táíllí bruscar nua seo atá leagtha anuas ar shaoránaithe atá faoi bhrú mór airgeadais cheana féin agus caithfear iad a chealú.

‘Breathnaíonn sé nach bhfuil sé de ghus ins an Aire Coveney féin aghaidh a thabhairt ar seo leis na comhlachtaí dramhaíola, dá bhrí sin beidh muide ag lorg tacaíocht Fhianna Fáíl agus Seanadóiri eile sa bhfreasúra ar an gCéadaoin leis an ionstraim reachtúil a thugann cead do na comhlachtaí dramhaíola a rogha costas a bhaint amach, a tharraingt siar.

‘Ansin, teastóidh díospóireacht níos leithne uainn maidir le seirbhísí dramhaíola anseo in Éirinn. Tá Sinn Féin i bhfabhar cur chuige poiblí a chuirfeadh seirbhís éifeachtach ar fáil ar fud na tíre agus a spreagfadh daoine chun a gcuid bruscar a laghdú, a athúsáid agus a athchúrsáil.

‘Dúshlán mór a bheidh anseo don ‘pholaitíocht nua’, más ann dó - agus tá muidne ag tabhairt dúshlán Fhianna Fáil ach go h-áirithe a gcuid ionadaithe i nGaillimh & Maigh Eo, beart a dhéanamh de réir briathair ar an gceist seo.’
