Lack of Broadband provision in West Tyrone needs addressed - McAleer
Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has called on the Executive to continue to work with Broadband and mobile phone providers to try and address lack of provision in West Tyrone and rural areas.
Mr McAleer said:
“Lack of broadband and mobile provision is a very serious issue across West Tyrone and it needs to be addressed.
“Broadband is a vital service but in rural areas across the North people feel isolated due to lack of provision.
“Like many rural MLAs I meet with constituents all the time whose daily lives are impacted by having little or no broadband.
“For example people in Altamuskin and right throughout the Sperrins have had intermittent or no broadband during the past year and it has had a huge impact in terms of the daily lives.
“Students and businesses in rural areas have difficulty accessing their work online or submitting their returns on time.
“The Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs have also called on farmers to submit their Single Application Form online as a means to make payments earlier but for many farmers this is an impossible task.
“I welcome the progress from the Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to improve connectivity and I will continue to work with my Executive colleagues to address the Programme for Government objectives of improving provision for West Tyrone and across the North.
“I look to the example of the government in Scotland which has made progress with mobile and broadband providers to ensure provision to remote areas.” ENDS/CRÍÓCH
