Adams welcomes Peace moves in Colombia
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has welcomed yesterday’s announcement of a bi-lateral ceasefire between the Colombian government and FARC.
In October last year the Sinn Féin leader met with the FARC negotiators while on a visit to Havana and Sinn Féin has played a supportive role throughout the process.
The Sinn Féin leader discussed with the FARC negotiators the peace process in Ireland and the approach Sinn Féin took in the negotiations.
Gerry Adams said:
“I want to warmly welcome the bilateral agreement reached between the Colombian government and FARC negotiators.
“This is a historic opportunity to bring to an end the longest running conflict in the world.
“In recent years Sinn Féin leaders have met with both sides as part of our international commitment to promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts. Two years ago Martin McGuinness travelled to Colombia and met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. Conor Murphy MLA, Alex Maskey MLA and others have been involved in briefings with both sides and last month Jennifer McCann MLA was in Havanna.
“Finally, I want to commend President Raul Castro and the Cuban government for its role in facilitating the Colombian peace process. Their patient engagement over many years has contributed significantly to this progress.”
