Family homelessness crisis getting steadily worse – McDonald

23 June, 2016 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald TD called on Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald to take immediate action to tackle the family homelessness crisis, which has spiralled out of control under the government’s watch.

Deputy McDonald said:

“Tánaiste, family homelessness is out of control. This not the fault of the local Councils or the Homeless Executive. It is a direct result of actions and inactions of your government.

“On your watch family homelessness has increased by 86% in one year. It is a direct result of actions and inactions of your government. Since July 2014 family homelessness has increase by a shocking 200%.

“Families are being turned away from the local authorities because there is not enough emergency accommodation. Hard working staff in local authorities are being forced into deciding why gets a bed and who is left out onto the street.

“With more families presenting than beds available, Council staff are left to determine who is the most deserving.

“Last month almost 4000 people across the state were living in emergency accommodation. This includes over 1,000 families with over 2,000 children.

“Tánaiste, what will your government do tonight, this week and next week to ensure that no child is forced to sleep rough because of a lack of emergency accommodation?

“And will you commit to publishing the Governments Housing Action Plan and scheduling a full debate on the plan in this house before the recess?”
